The present invention relates to an apparatus (100) and a corresponding method for operation in a magnetic particle imaging mode for influencing and/or detecting magnetic particles in a field of view (28) and for operation in a magnetic resonance imaging mode, which apparatus comprises selection means comprising a selection field signal generator unit (110) and selection field coils (116), drive means comprising a drive field signal generator unit (130) and drive field coils (136a, 136b, 136c) for changing the position in space of the two sub-zones (52, 54) in the field of view (28) by means of a magnetic drive field so that the magnetization of the magnetic material changes locally, and focus means comprising a focus field signal generator unit (120) and a focus field coil unit (126) for changing the position in space of the field of view (28) by means of a magnetic focus field, wherein said focus field coil unit (126) comprises at least six focus field coils (32a-32d, 34a-34d; 33a-33f) arranged for generating magnetic focus field components in different directions, wherein a first set of at least three focus field coils (32a, 32c, 34a, 34c; 33a-33c) is arranged on a first side of the field of view (28) and a second set of at least three focus field coils (32b, 32d, 34b, 34d; 33d-33f) is arranged on a second side of the field of view (28) opposite said first side. |
