The fuel cell system (1) includes a fuel cell (2), a fuel tank (3), a consumer unit (4) and a consumption optimizing unit (5) which monitors the fill level (7) of the fuel tank. The consumption optimizing unit monitors a parameter selected from a group consisting of an energy demand, an energy supply and both with respect to the consumer unit based on the fill level of the fuel tank.
