Shaft seal assembly, esp. for stern shafts of ships, has a resilient ring (2) having a radial part (21, 22) clamped between axially inner and outer rigid rings (1, 3) of the seal housing. A radially inner and generally axially extending part (23, 24) of the resilient ring has at its free end a lip engaging the shaft. The axially outer rigid ring has a portion (31) supporting the radially inner part (23, 24) of the resilient ring adjacent the juncture of latter part with the radial part. Otherwise the radially inner part is free to flex in the sense giving the lip freedom to move radially.
