The invention relates to a screw press with a separate flywheel as an energy store and a coupling to connect the said flywheel to the spindle, it being proposed according to the invention that exclusively the spindle and parts which are fixedly connected to the latter be driven. Furthermore, it is advantageous that the drive motor initially only accelerates the spindle to a predetermined speed of rotation from a stationary state, after which the actual flywheel is coupled by means of a coupling and is decoupled once again after a switch point has been reached, only the spindle being driven to raise the pusher rod.
