A method and device for the convolutional coding of data blocks, each consisting of a predetermined number N of source data, wherein each of said source data is input twice in the same convolutional coder (22) implementing an L period generator polynomial, in an order such that the two inputs of the same source data di are separated by the input of (pi.L)-1 other source data, pi being an integer other than zero. The invention also discloses a corresponding decoding method and device. It is particularly useful for transmitting short messages, for example in radiotelephone, satellite communication or computerised telecommunication (such as the Internet network) applications.
