PURPOSE: A method for controlling overtravel of a feed shaft for a machine tool is provided to facilitate the automatic recovery of the feed shaft to improve the precision in the recovery operation. CONSTITUTION: A machine tool stops a feed shaft feeding at the overtravel of the machine tool(110,120). A numerical controller of the machine tool stores the position of the feed shaft at storage(130). Operating a switch for releasing the overtravel commands the machine tool to release the emergency stop(140). The numerical controller commands the feed shaft in state of the overtravel to move to the operation area(150). The feed direction and distance of the shaft are determined to compare with the position of the feed shaft at the overtravel stored at the storage(160). The emergency stop is released and the feed shaft is fed into the operation area(170). The state of the overtravel is released to complete the recovery of the feed shaft(180).
