PURPOSE:To improve the mechanical strength of a display panel by intersection spacers of X direction and Y direction at right angles and bringing them into lose contact with each other at the intersecting point. CONSTITUTION:A linear transparent electrode and a lead 2 are constituted in the X direction, and a linear transparent electrode and a lead 2' are constituted also in the Y direction. Stripes 14, 14' provided in an insulation area 22 intersect each other at right angles and they contact closely at the intersecting point 18. Thus, spacers 14, 14' and sealing members 6, 6' can be provided without using a photomask. Leakage of light to each picture element from adjoing picture elements can be prevented perfectly by the spacers of the X direction and Y direction. Further, as one spacer is provided in the interval of electrodes, for instance about 400mu, the liquid crystal panel can be handled as a very strong substrate.
