FIELD: chemistry.SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing a substrate having antimicrobial properties. The method includes a step of depositing a non-gelling metal layer, which includes an inorganic antimicrobial agent obtained from a precursor in the form of a metal, colloid, chelate or ion, on at least one of the surfaces of a glass substrate and a step for diffusion of said agent via heat treatment. In another version, the substrate can be coated with an underlayer or a top coating and diffusion occurs into either the underlayer or the top coating.
