The journal bearings 26, 27 of a shaft 12 of an I.C. engine turbo-charger are lubricated by oil or gas according to the gas pressure, which is the air discharge from the compressor. Oil is supplied by a pump 4 or from the lubricating system of the engine through a conduit 74 and flows through ports 75, passages 77, 78 and ports 82, 83 to the bearings. Air from the compressor flows through ports 97, 98 past valve 94 to passage 78 to the bearings. A spring loaded valve 93 is fixed to a piston 86 such that the valve is open to allow oil flow when the air pressure acting on the piston is below a predetermined pressure and the valve 93 closes when the air reaches this pressure after which the valve 94 is opened to provide air lubrication. |
