The method involves receiving a digital reference value (26) for an operating variable of an electric machine at a reference value-input (24) by a drive regulator (22). A precontroller value (40) is produced at a control output (28) based on the reference value by a dynamic voltage precontroller (38). A d-component (Ud) of a complex voltage is adjusted by the output. An actual value (44) of the variable is estimated by an estimating device (42). Another precontroller value (50) is produced from a difference value (48) between the reference value and the estimated value by the precontroller.
