A storage battery is provided with a gas vent comprising a tubular member 17 closed at the top by an elastic cap 31 which is stretched over, and interlocks with, a groove in the member 17. The cap fits tightly against the upper annular surface of the member 17, but lifts under excessive gas pressure, the gas escaping through openings 36 in the cap. The cap can be removed by a handle 33. A slidable filler tube 41 having an opening in its side wall may be provided. When liquid is to be added to the battery, the cap 31 is removed and the tube 41 raised till the opening is covered by the wall of the member 17. A projection 44 limits the movement of the tube. In a modified form of filling tube the member 17 is formed with vertical slots in which projections on the tube slide as the tube is raised, and the tube is held in its raised position by being turned through a right angle. |
