PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system using MBC memory cells to reduce the number of highest writing states used to write data to a given data field.SOLUTION: A method for reading data in a multiple bits per cell (MBC) non-volatile memory comprises the steps of: detecting a threshold voltage of a MBC cell in a page; supplying an upper data word by comparing the threshold voltage with a predetermined reference voltage; and inverting the upper data word if an upper page polarity flag is set.
