PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide optimum dimming while eliminating the need for the operation of switching the method of photometry. SOLUTION: An image signal of the subject of imaging, picked up by a CCD 6, is fed from a CDS 11 to a photometry circuit 16. The photometry circuit 16 performs peak photometry at the center part of an image pickup range and average photometry at the peripheral part of the range, with the results of photometry outputted to a light source device 3 as dimming signals. The light source device 3 controls a diaphragm 18 according to the dimming signals. For example, when a treatment implement is located at the peripheral part, luminance derived from the treatment implement has little influence on the results of photometry, and an affected part of high luminance at the center part, for example, can be observed with sufficient luminance by peak photometry.
