[Also in Division B5] A screw. mixer comprises a cylindrical barrel, a screw with a core supported concentrically within the barrel, an annular recess in the screw and core concentric with the axis of the barrel and a plurality of rolling elements received in the space between the recesses and the barrel, the elements having a diameter greater than the radial distance between the outside of the core and the inside of the barrel. As shown the extruder screws 14, 15 and 22 are formed on a core 12 and are separated by recesses 6 and 7 comprising annular grooves. Balls 17 having a diameter greater than the separation, of core 12 and inner surface 18 of barrel 19 occupy the recess and work the plastics material as it passes between them. The barrel 19 is of smooth internal surface so that the screw shown can be used with any conventional barrel. In alternative embodiments the rolling elements may be cylinders with a central groove and the recess in the extruder may have a corresponding elevated portion to maintain the correct orientation of the rollers. The barrel may be cooled downstream from rolling elements and radial pegs may be provided between the screw threads in the cooling section to assist the heat transfer. |
