<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve workability for attaching and adjusting a detecting portion. <P>SOLUTION: A photoelectric encoder comprises a scale on which a diffraction grating of a predetermined pitch is formed in a measuring axis direction, a detecting head that is arranged relatively movable with respect to the scale and includes an irradiating portion for irradiating the scale with light and a receiving portion for receiving the light reflected at or transmitted through the diffraction grating of the scale, a signal processing device for processing a received signal from the receiving portion of the detecting head, and signal transmission means for transmitting the signal between the detecting head and the signal processing device.
