Latex-like dispersions of poly-(vinyl aromatic) compounds are made by anionically polymerizing vinyl aromatic compounds in an organic liquid which is a non-solvent for the polymer produced and which contains a polymeric substance as a dispersing agent, e.g. natural rubber, homopolymers of butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, 2,3-dimethylbutadiene and 2-methylpentadiene, and copolymers of such dienes with styrene or a derivative thereof, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate or vinylidene chloride, butyl rubber, polyisobutylene and polymers and copolymers of ethylene and propylene. Preferred anionic polymerization catalysts are butyl lithium, phenyl sodium, sodium metal, sodium phosphide, and polybutadienyl lithium which acts both as a catalyst and as a dispersant. The examples describe the preparation of dispersions of polystyrene in heptane.
|
