Mapping the physical location of data items critical to the operation of an organization comprises: communicating with a document management system (DMS) to tag the critical data items, identify their locations in one or more file servers of the DMS, and retrieve corresponding identifiers; communicating with at least one virtual environment management system, using the identifiers to determine one or more logical unit identifiers (LUNs) which identify the physical hard disks that are used by the file servers; communicating with a data centre management system to retrieve physical location data for hard disks storing the items; and mapping the location data onto a physical map of the network to provide a visual display of the location of critical data and related factors, such as identifying users accessing the data. This display may provide a tree structure illustrating each location, physical and virtual, where the critical data may be found. The map may be used to enact restrictions on where physically the data can be stored, accounting for local data retention laws, for example.
|
