<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a vinyl polymer with a very low content of a transition metal by effectively removing a catalyst of a metal complex having a transition metal of Group 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 in the periodic table as a central metal, used in atom transfer radical polymerization. <P>SOLUTION: The vinyl polymer polymerized by the atom transfer radical polymerization is dissolved in a water-insoluble solvent and is brought into contact with pure water or an aqueous solution in which an inorganic salt is dissolved. The transition metal complex of Group 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 in the periodic table used as the catalyst is transferred to the water side.
