A deposition friction stir weld process of joining work pieces (18,20) includes placing a filler material (34) on and about a joint line (16) formed by butting a first work piece (18) against a second work piece (20); and frictionally heating the filler material (34) to soften the filler material (34) and portions of the first and second work piece (18,20) in thermal contact with the filler material (34) and form a weld between the first and second work pieces (18,20), wherein frictionally heating is at a temperature below a melting point of the filler material (34) and the first and second workpiece surfaces (18,20). Also disclosed herein is a friction stir welding assembly for providing the deposition friction stir weld in association with deposit of the filler material (34) and contour of a workpiece surface. |
