PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of accurately detecting a sheet thickness, regardless of the thickness of a sheet. SOLUTION: When performing the setting of paper used by a user, a CPU determines whether or not basic weight of the set paper is basic weight D<SB>M</SB>or less being a threshold value (S4). As a result of this determination, when the basic weight of the set paper is the basic weight D<SB>M</SB>or less, the CPU selects an amplification degree to a value n<SB>2</SB>(S25). While, when the basic weight of the set paper is larger than the basic weight D<SB>M</SB>being the threshold value, the CPU selects the amplification degree to a value n<SB>1</SB>(S26). Afterwards, the CPU performs calibration of a sensor output level, and prepares for starting a JOB (S23).
