<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication apparatus and communication method, wherein switching from a non-spatial multiplexing scheme to a spatial multiplexing scheme can be performed only as required. <P>SOLUTION: A setting section 45 sets a scheme for communication to any other one or more communication apparatuses of communication partners to a non-spatial multiplexing scheme or a spatial multiplexing scheme. Based on the capability of a communication system including a present apparatus itself and the other one or more communication apparatuses of the communication partners, the setting section 45 switches setting of the communication scheme to the other one or more communication apparatuses of the communication partner from the non-spatial multiplexing scheme to the spatial multiplexing scheme.
