The present invention refers to a linear peptide, without disulfide bonds best known as vejovine, which has an antibiotic activity, containing 47 amino acids and a molecular weight of 4,873, the same being isolated and characterised from the scorpion venom of Vaejovis mexicanus scorpion and also successfully synthesised. The primary structure thereof is fully provided, as shown in Fig. 4. The Vejovine, either native or synthetic, inhibits the bacterial culture growth. The partial similarity in the amino acidic sequence of Vejovine with regard to the Hadririne, Opistoporin 1 and 2 and the Pandinin 1, in the amine and carboxyl terminal allows us to conclude that said peptides constitute a novel family within the antimicrobial peptides. Additional data of non-functional peptides are shown and possible modifications are also argued. The invention also includes the pharmaceutical compositions for the application of the novel peptide and the DNA sequence encoding for the same.
