The invention relates to a method for operating a drivetrain of a motor vehicle, wherein the drivetrain has a drive unit comprising at least one internal combustion engine (1) and has a gearbox (2) connected between the drive unit and a drive output (3), and wherein a gearbox control device (6) and/or an engine control device (5) opens the drivetrain as a function of defined operating conditions during driving operation of the drivetrain, in such a way that, when the drivetrain is open, the latter is operated either in a rolling mode with the internal combustion engine (1) running or in a coasting mode with the internal combustion engine (1) deactivated. According to the invention, during driving operation of the drivetrain, an energy balance for the drivetrain is established continuously as a function of a driver demand (7), wherein as a function of said energy balance, the drivetrain is opened or closed in order to activate or deactivate the rolling mode or coasting mode.
