PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small overvoltage protection element. SOLUTION: The overvoltage protection element is provided with: an electrode 3 having an ohmic contact in a sub-collector region 13; an anode region 4 formed on the sub-collector region 13 and having second conductivity reverse to first conductivity; an anode electrode 18 having an ohmic contact on the anode region 4; a base mesa region 5 formed separately from the anode region 4 and having the second conductivity; an emitter mesa region 7 formed on the base mesa region 5 and having the first conductivity; an emitter mesa region 8 formed separately from the emitter mesa region 7 and having the first conductivity; an emitter electrode 10 having an ohmic contact on the emitter mesa region 8; an emitter electrode 9 having an ohmic contact on the emitter mesa region 7; a wiring 16 for connecting the electrode 3 to the emitter electrode 10; and a wiring 17 for connecting the anode electrode 18 to the emitter electrode.
