<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a honeycomb structure capable of being prevented from damage caused by the force applied to the honeycomb structure in its diametric direction and reduced in heat capacity. <P>SOLUTION: The honeycomb structure is constituted by bundling a plurality of honeycomb baked bodies, each of which has a large number of through-holes arranged thereto in parallel in its longitudinal direction so as to be separated by partition walls, through an adhesive layer. The honeycomb baked body includes a center-honeycomb baked body positioned in the center and an outer peripheral part-honeycomb-baked body positioned at the outer periphery, in the cross section vertical to the longitudinal direction of the honeycomb structure, the shape of the cross section vertical to the longitudinal direction of the center-honeycomb baked body is a square, the cross-sectional area of the center-honeycomb baked body is 2,500-5,000 mm<SP>2</SP>, the shape of the cross section vertical to the longitudinal direction of each of the outer peripheral-part-honeycomb baked bodies is different from the shape of the cross section vertical to the longitudinal direction of the center-honeycomb baked body, and the cross sectional area vertical to the longitudinal direction of each of the outer peripheral-part-honeycomb baked body is 0.9-1.3 times the cross-sectional area vertical to the longitudinal direction of the center of the center-honeycomb baked body.
