PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the technology for actualizing normal re-scanning without re-setting of a document to a user in the cases where an error is detected during the scanning operation of the document. SOLUTION: The scanner includes transferring routes (31, 32) for transferring the document fed from a document tray 15 to the predetermined reading position, a document reading means 160 for reading the document passing through the reading position, an error detecting means for detecting failure in reading of the document by the document reading means 160, and a route changing means for changing the transferring route of the document. The route changing means changes the transferring route to return the document to the reading position when the error detecting means has failed in reading of the document and the document reading means reads again the document transferred to the reading position through the transferring route changed.
