An apparatus and a method for supporting a MIMO mode in a wireless telecommunications system for minimizing necessary information according to a selected MIMO mode in resource allocation are provided to select an MIMO mode suitable for environment of a receiver in MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output) mode and to minimize an amount of feedback information. Each of the receivers(110,120,130) selects an optimum MIMO mode between a plurality of MIMO modes. The information of the selected MIMO mode is transmitted to a transmitter(100). Each receiver measures the downlink channel information according to the measured downlink channel information. The feedback information(140) including the rank information of a CSI(Channel State Information), a CQI(Channel Quality Information/Indicator), a codebook index, and a channel is transmitted to the transmitter.
