PURPOSE:To enablethe purification of a crude aromatic vinyl compound containing acetylene compound as an impurity, with simple procedure, at a low cost, by passing the crude vinyl compound through a catalyst layer containing one or more elements of tungsten and zinc, in the presence of steam at an elevated temperature. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic vinyl compound such as styrene, alpha-methylstyrene, vinyltoluene, divinylbenzene, etc. is heated at 150-400 deg.C, especially about 200-350 deg.C in the presence of steam, and passed through a catalyst layer containing tungsten and/or zinc (preferably the oxide of the element supported on a carrier such as silica, alumina, etc.) to remove the trace acetylene compound existing in thearomatic vinyl compound used as the raw material. A similar operation is effective also to the purification of a crude aromatic vinyl compound which is a mixture of an aromatic vinyl compound and an aromatic alkyl compound obtained by contacting an aromatic alkyl compound with a dehydrogenation catalyst in the presence of steam.
