SOLUTION: The control system 1 for the internal combustion engine 3 controls the air-fuel ratio mode with switching between the lean mode and the rich mode, and is provided with a lean mode target fresh air amount setting means 2 setting a lean mode target fresh air amount QAIR_LEAN which is a target of fresh air amount QAIR in the lean mode, a rich mode target fresh air amount setting means 2 setting a rich mode target fresh air amount QAIR_RICH which is a target of fresh air amount QAIR in the rich mode, and a fuel injection timing correction means 2 correcting fuel injection timingϕINJ according to according to difference between the target fresh air amount for the lean mode or the rich mode and the detected fresh air amount QAIR upon switching air fuel ratio mode.
