An image display apparatus and a method for controlling an over current in the same are provided to perform normal operation thereof by determining whether an over current is caused from low temperature or error of a luminance control circuit. An image display apparatus includes an illumination unit(230), a power supply unit(220), a main circuit(210), and a constant voltage generator. The illumination unit having a lamp radiates lights to a display screen. The power supply unit supplies a source voltage for driving the lamp. The main circuit outputs a luminance control signal for controlling luminance of the illumination unit and controls the power supply unit. The constant voltage generator implemented between the main circuit and the power supply unit generates a constant voltage by controlling the luminance control signal outputted from the main circuit. The main circuit detects an over current flowing in the lamp, outputs a luminance control signal, which is used for applying a voltage corresponding to the over current to the lamp, or drives the constant voltage generator to control the luminance control signal.
