A superplastic forming apparatus (10) and method for hot forming a sheet into a workpiece (50) having a complex geometry. The method first uses a forming step with die contact from both sides, which draws material along a major axis to form a first preform (40). Upon completion of the first forming step, a second, initial superplastic forming step is performed on the first preform to create a second preform (44) having a plurality of grooves (46) located thereon. The grooves function to draw additional material prior to a final fluid forming step, which completes the forming process by driving the material against a forming surface. Reduces forming time and eliminates thinning and wrinkling of the sheet during forming. |
