PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle recognition device capable of recognizing a standard plate fixed to a normal vehicle and a plate (a special plate) other than the standard plate by high rate of recognition. SOLUTION: The device is provided with: a light source 2 for irradiating a license plate of the vehicle; cameras 1-A and 1-B for photographing the vehicle and the license plate of the vehicle; a plate detection part 6 for detecting a candidate of the license plate from the image photographed by the camera; a plate recognition part 12 for recognizing character information from the candidate image of the detected license plate; and a vehicle feature extraction part 14 for extracting the feature of a vehicle other than the character information on the license plate from the image photographed by the camera.
