A rope brake for an elevator is provided to perform a gradual brake by braking the rope while moving one of both linings in a rope moving direction. A rope brake for an elevator includes a first brake lining(120), a second lining(122), a horizontal driving unit and a control unit. The first brake lining has a lining plane which is slantingly formed upwardly at a predetermined angle. The first brake lining moves upwardly to a predetermined distance by frictional force with a upwardly moving rope, and compresses the rope strongly. The second brake lining has a lining plane which is slantingly formed downwardly at a predetermined angle. The second brake lining moves downwardly to a predetermined distance by frictional force with the downwardly moving rope, and compresses the rope strongly. The horizontal driving unit moves horizontally one of the first and second linings to be close to or far away the other lining. The control unit controls the first and second brake linings to be close to each other in case of braking the rope by controlling the horizontal driving unit. The control unit controls the first and second brake linings to be far away each other in case of releasing the rope.
