A helical-scan video tape recorder has a facility for still reproduction, during which the capstan 7 is disconnected from the driving means, the tape T is held stationary between the capstan 7 and a pinch roller 13, and the position of the tape T on the guide drums 3, 4 is adjusted to preserve a suitable scanning relationship between the tape and the rotating head (5, Figs. 6 and 7, not shown). As shown, for normal playback the capstan flywheel 12 is driven by means of wheels 8, 10. For slowmotion reproduction (Fig. 2, not shown), movement of a slide 56, and hence of a lever 14, causes the normal drive train 8, 10 to be replaced by a train 9, 15, 19, 18, 22 and a pushrod 61 to rotate a member 66 which by means of a screw (68, Figs. 6 and 7) moving in a fixed nut (69) raises a tape guide 67 to adjust the path of the tape T round the guide drums 3, 4. For still reproduction, a lever 40 is then rotated (Fig. 3), so that an arm 27 withdraws the drive train from the flywheel 12 and a wheel 45 engages the flywheel to permit fine manual adjustment of the longitudinal position of the tape by means of a knob 46. Tape tension is maintained by conventional braking and guiding means or by the application of torque to the take-up hub 1 through an idler wheel 82. |
