A method and an apparatus for controlling charging of telephones are provided to turn on the telephone and to charge a battery by rapidly charging the telephone at an initial operation for supplying a sufficient current. A charging pnp transistor(Q1) receives a current from a source unit and rapidly supplies the current to a battery. A charging terminal(50) of the battery is connected to the charging pnp transistor. A resistor(R3) is connected to a base terminal of the charging pnp transistor. A collector of an npn transistor(Q2) is connected to the resistor. A resistor(R4) is connected to a base terminal of the transistor and the charging terminal and provides the current during a slow charging phase. An npn transistor(Q3) is connected to the base and collector terminals of the npn transistor and turns off the first and second transistors, when an initial rapid current is received. A resistor(R6) is connected to a base terminal of the npn transistor and turns on the transistor according to a charging capacity of the battery. The resistor is connected to the charging terminal.
