METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR VIDEO ENCODING AND DECODING

A method and an apparatus for encoding and decoding images are provided to effectively recover an error generated in an image having a large horizontal motion by using a left/right field encoding method. An image encoding method includes a step of deciding one of frame encoding, top/bottom field encoding and left/right field encoding methods according to the characteristic of the original image(S1210), and a step of adaptively applying the decided encoding method to the original image to generate bit streams(S1230). An image decoding method includes a step of determining the encoding method of the received bit streams, and adaptively executing a frame decoding, top/bottom field decoding or left/right field decoding method to generate a decoded image.
