PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface treatment method for aluminum and an aluminum alloy where the generation of harmful gas is reduced, high luster can be obtained with a reduced chemical consumption, and conditional control is facilitated. SOLUTION: In the surface treatment method for aluminum or an aluminum alloy, in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt having a concentration of≥0.01 mol/L, energizing is performed using an aluminum or aluminum alloy material as an anode in such a manner that voltage is controlled to≥10 V and electric quantity is controlled to 0.2 to 2.0 A×hr/dm<SP>2</SP>, so as to obtain surface luster.
