PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely transmit the oscillation of a first lever which oscillates to the left and right like a pendulum to the horizontal reciprocation of a second lever to which a spreader is attached, to reduce the cost by simplifying the driving structure of the spreader, and to more easily perform the switching operation between the top stitching and the flat stitching. SOLUTION: The top stitching device converts the rotation of an upper shaft 1 to the reciprocation of the spreader by making a follower 4 abut on an oscillation width cam 2 disposed above the upper shaft 1 and connecting the first lever 3 which oscillates to the left/right like a pendulum in the front of the sewing machine to the second lever 8 with the spreader 12 at the distal end which reciprocates horizontally along the needle position 13 by a connection rod 9 with spherical bearings 10 and 11 at both ends.
