An apparatus for winding wire or rod on a reel having a shield, at least a portion of which is movable, to substantially enclose and protect wire wound on the reel when the wire is cut. A circumferential gap is provided between an edge of the shield and a flange of the reel through which the cut end of the wire can extend.
