PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems of a detection part mounted in a conventional bill discriminating device wherein many bills can not be discriminated such as between new and old bills, stained bills, or superimposed bills, wherein bills can not be accurately sorted into bill storage parts classified by kind, and wherein the discrimination of bills can not catch up with the conveyance of the bills and the bills can not be securely discriminated because the bills are conveyed to the bill discrimination device by a bill conveying device continuously one after another. SOLUTION: The bill discrimination device consists of a bill discriminating part for receiving bills conveyed by the bill conveying device and discriminating the bills, a posture changing passage part for changing the posture of the bills, and a passage switching part for sorting the bills into bill storage devices classified by kind and an indiscriminable bill storage part. The bill discriminating part comprises a conveyor belt wrapped around a driving pulley synchronized with the rotation of a motor, a transmission sensor for detecting the center and outer ends of a conveyed bill, a transmission sensor for detecting the approach/passage of the bill, an actuator for confirming the passage/clogging of the bill, and an encoder detecting the length of the bill and synchronized with the transmission sensor for detecting the approach/passage.
