The method involves using a friction wheel (18) brought into contact with the periphery of a vehicle wheel (11) and used for indexing an incremental source (21). A start-stop source is provided by a detector (16.1,16.2) cooperating with a marking (14) carried by the vehicle wheel. The signals from both sources are evaluated via an evaluation logic. The friction wheel is pressed into contact with the vehicle wheel at a constant pressure ensuring slip-free transmission of the wheel rotation. The friction wheel may be displaced together with the movement of the vehicle wheel along the rail track.
