The warning system, to alert a driver asleep at the wheel that the vehicle is about to stray off the road, has a row of profiles at intervals of 0.5-1.5 m at the edge of the road traffic lane. The profile bodies (1) are rectangular and have a stepped structure with preferably four steps (2-5) extending from the leading side (8) against the driving direction (6). Further steps (2a-5a) are at the sides (9, 10) of the profile. The steps extend over 50-66% of the profile length (a).
