PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method, capable of accurately inspecting the presence or absence of a defect, even in the case that a luminescent spot defect or a vanished spot defect is caused by the defect arising at a portion of one display pixel. SOLUTION: One LCD pixel in an LCD panel 12 is comparted into four blocks, and a CCD camera 20 is arranged so that luminance values can be detected at respective blocks, and a determination is made as to whether or not each detected lighting luminance value of blocks is higher than a reference value. In the case a lighting luminance value is higher than the reference value, the display pixel including the corresponding block is determined as the luminescent spot defect.
