PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ink jet recorder in which durability is enhanced by making the flushing time proportional to the shape of a print mask. SOLUTION: When pigment ink is employed in an ink jet recorder ejecting ink utilizing thermal energy, the pigment component may scorch and stick to the heater surface. Consequently, ejection speed lowers and registration is shifted thus lowering the image quality. A countermeasure is proposed to remove scorched pigment component periodically by flushing operation for applying a higher power to the heater, but it causes damage on the heater. The invention proposes a flushing method advantageous to the durability of a recording head. The conduction time for applying power is proportional to the ejection frequency being controlled by a print mask. In other words, conduction time is prolonged for a nozzle having a high ejection frequency because scorched pigment component is deposited much whereas conduction time is shortened for a nozzle having a low ejection frequency because scorched pigment component is deposited little.
