PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus properly compatible with requirements of high-speed image reading and high image quality. SOLUTION: In the case of an image quality priority mode, a CIS 50 preliminarily scans an image of one side of an original and reversely conveys it to a CCD image sensor 78, the image sensor applies main scanning to the image of the same side of the original. In this case, the background of the original is detected by read data of all sides of the original obtained by the preliminary scanning to correct the read data obtained by the main scanning. Further, when the CCD image sensor 78 applies main scanning to the one side image of the original, the CIS 50 applies preliminary scanning to the other side image of the original. On the other hand, in the case of a productivity priority mode, the CIS 50 applies main scanning to the one side image of the original and the CCD image sensor 78 applies main scanning to the other side image of the original. Then the background of the original is detected from tips of the read data of each side of the original obtained by the main scanning to correct the read data obtained by the main scanning.
