A process is disclosed for the preparation of a steel surface for single-dip aluminium-rich zinc galvanising. The process steps comprise: cleaning the surface so as to obtain less than 0.6 mu g/cm<2> residual dirt; pickling the surface; applying a protective layer to the surface by immersion in a flux solution comprising bismuth. This invention also relates to a continuous steel product coated with a layer of metallic bismuth.
