A combination lock comprises a face plate C having slots 42, a latching slide member D on the underside of the face plate, the slide member having slots 74 in alignment with the face plate slots, a shaft J in the underside ot the slide member, dials 22 positioned in the slots, a sleeve 20 for each dial mounted on the shaft with the sleeves in abutting, end-toend relationship, each sleeve having a flange 32 and a flat portion 34, the slide member slots allowing entry of the flanges, whereby movement of the slide member is blocked, the slide member bypassing the flat portions, means 36, 38 on each dial and its respective sleeve for keying them together, spring means F on the shaft normally urging the sleeves into keyed relationship with their respective dials, resilient means cooperating with the dials, means 92 connected to the shaft for moving the sleeves out of keyed engagement with the dials and a back cover E connected to the face plate. As shown, in which the lock is used to fasten and lock a hasp assembly B, the slide member is withdrawable from its locking position by means of a button 50 after the dials have been rotated to bring the flat portions on the sleeves to the position shown in Fig. 6. In this position of the sleeves, the latter may be disengaged from their respective dials by the means 92, constituted by a lever slidable in the direction of the arrow X. In order to prevent the slide member being locked in its fastening position when the initial "open" combination is unknown, each sleeve is provided with a visual indicator 110 i.e. a slot or a spot of paint, located 180 degrees from the plane of the flat portion which is visible through a slot 112 in the cover E. When all the dials have been moved so that the indicators can be sighted through their respective slots, the lever 92 may be operated to enable the required code to be set up on the dials.</p> |
