APPARATUS AND A METHOD FOR ADAPTIVE REDUCTION OF RINGING ARTIFACTS TO SUPPRESS RINGING ARTIFACTS WHICH COMMONLY ARISES IN DECOMPRESSED IMAGES

PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for adaptive reduction of ringing artifacts are provided to suppress ringing artifacts which commonly arises in decompressed images by examining local statistics. CONSTITUTION: A pixel window which includes a set of pixels from the input image pixels is selected(22). Areas of ringing artifacts are detected in the pixel window on a basis of pixel information(24). The pixels in the detected areas are processed so that the detected ringing artifacts in those areas can be reduced(26). An enhanced output image is generated, wherein the enhanced output image includes the processed pixels with reduced ringing artifacts(30).
