A method of operating via a smart card (SC) an access gateway between a local area network (LAN) and a wide area network (WAN) under the control of management system (SP), includes the steps of: - providing in the smart card (SC) at least a first memory area (A1) containing configuration data for access to the wide area network (WAN) that cannot be modified by the user (U) and a second memory area (A2), adapted for storing personalized configuration data of the user, and - providing in the access gateway (AG) a third memory area (A3) and storing the contents of the second memory area (A2) of the smart card in the third memory area (A3).
