The method involves sensing the surface structure of a transducer wheel (14) that is connected to the crankshaft (10) so as to rotate with it. The angular position of at least one balance weight (12) that is connected to the crankshaft so as to rotate with it is also determined. The crankshaft has a number of attached balance weights and an attached transducer wheel with a defined surface structure sensed by a fixed pick-up (16). An independent claim is also included for the following: (a) an arrangement for implementing the inventive method.
